Hermit Crab Fight

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

So after two days of having my new blue leg hermit crab stuck in a hole with the red tip hermit crab hanging on the end of the shell sticking out, I decided enough was enough and knocked the red tip hermit crab onto the sand.

The blue leg hermit crab then crawled out of the hole he was stuck in and started to eat so I thought everything was fine and dandy.

I checked on the tank a few minutes later and noticed the blue leg racing along the tank with the red tip standing close by. I separated them again and sure enough the red tip hermit crab was cornering the blue leg hermit crab. It sure didn’t seem it was going to be a friendly greeting with how frantic the blue leg was acting.

I now had a choice to make of how to handle this. I didn’t want to out and out kill one off but one crab was going to die if I didn’t do anything. I knew that from pure aesthetic reason the blue leg hermit was going to stay. So as of now it appears the refuge clean up crew just got a little larger with the addition of one red tip hermit crab. I am not a total bad person, I at least put in a couple of empty shells for him in his new home. Hopefully after a few molts the blue leg hermit crab will be able to hold his own and I can bring the red tip out of his current exile.

Hermit Crab Shells

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

Instead of paying about 50 cent each for each shell from the fish store, I decided to follow a suggestion from a forum post that I read on how to get more shells for my hermit crabs.  I went to the local hobby lobby and simple bought three bags of shells for a total just under ten dollars.  Once I got these shells home I fired up the stove and boiled all the shells to clean them up before I added any to the tank.  I ended up with more shells than I could possibly ever use.  My two hermit crabs haven’t swapped any shells yet from either the shells from the fish store or from the newly boiled ones but if they use the craft shells I will be sure to drop a note.  Below are the pictures after I boiled and somewhat sorted them out on size and shape.
